Mission 2: Unexpected Visitors ( Coming 2024)

In North Carolina, eleven-year-old enslaved twins Jeb and Liza are in grave danger. The new spiteful mistress of Great Oaks Plantation wants to rid herself of the first wife’s favored slaves. The twins, grandmother, and father brave the snakes, mosquitoes, and lightning as they sail through the Great Dismal Swamp Canal, part of the Maritime Underground Railroad. Early on June 17, 1832, a massive electrical storm opens an intersection between time and space. Rather than meeting abolitionist William Hamilton at the AME Zion Church in New York City in 1832, they surprise Sophia, Pedro, and their animal friends in the Central Park Zoo, in 2022. The “Twins Forever Free” mission literally materializes before Sophia's and Pedro's eyes.

Summer just got a lot less boring. Sophia and Pedro must ease their unexpected visitors into modern New York City life and find them a safe home. Most importantly, they must complete their mission without attracting the attention of Child Protective Services, the bullies at school, or any well-meaning adults.

Prequel to Mission 1: All in a Day's Work, a middle-grade detective book for ages 8-12.

While at a book and pizza event at the Jefferson Market Library, Sophia and Pedro discover their next adventure. The historic Greenwich Village library was once the notorious Jefferson Market Courthouse. The trials of the 1909 Triangle Shirtwaist strikers were held in the corrupt Night Court—the same room as the book event. Sophia and Pedro soon uncover the truth. The very reasons for the workers striking were what caused the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Fire on March 25, 1911, only eleven months after the strike ended. Tragedies happen and justice can fail, but Sophia and Pedro learn they are called to stand up for what is right.
